Wildlife in Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka's largest and oldest wildlife sanctuary, spanning over 130,000 hectares of pristine wilderness on the northwest coast. Known poetically as the 'Land of Lakes,' Wilpattu is world-renowned for its unique topographical feature: nearly sixty natural, rain-fed freshwater lakes known as 'villus' fringed with gleaming white sand and lush aquatic vegetation.

The park is also home to a thriving population of Sri Lankan Leopards, which are often seen drinking at the edge of quiet villus or resting on low branches in the dense dry-zone forest. Other resident wildlife includes Asian Elephants, spotted deer, wild barking deer, water buffalo, mugger crocodiles, and white-bellied sea eagles.
