What Makes This Experience Special

Step into the cradle of ancient Sinhala civilization with an exploration of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa—two monumental UNESCO World Heritage cities that anchored Sri Lanka's classical golden age for over 1,500 years.

In Anuradhapura, the first royal capital founded in the 4th century BCE, history and living devotion merge seamlessly. Here stands the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the original tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, recognized as the oldest historically authenticated living human-planted tree in the world (over 2,300 years old). Towering above the plains are colossal brick stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya—the latter once the third tallest monument in the ancient world, surpassed only by the Pyramids of Giza.

Further east lies medieval Polonnaruwa, which succeeded Anuradhapura in the 11th century. Polonnaruwa is an architectural marvel of stone palaces, council chambers, and sophisticated hydraulic engineering. The pinnacle of ancient Sri Lankan art is preserved at Gal Vihara, where four monumental Buddha statues—including a serene 14-meter reclining Buddha—are masterfully carved into a single sheer granite rock face.

Wandering among these ancient monastic complexes, peaceful lotus ponds, and sweeping man-made reservoirs ('seas') offers a humbling encounter with human ingenuity.

With Traviceylon, your tour is conducted with veteran archaeological historians in air-conditioned comfort, ensuring you uncover the deep philosophical stories etched in stone.
