Bird Watching in Sinharaja Forest

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last viable primary tropical rainforest and a crown jewel of global biodiversity. Designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, this primordial virgin forest shelters over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic wildlife species and provides an incomparable sanctuary for ornithologists and nature photographers.

Of the 34 bird species endemic to Sri Lanka, an astonishing 28 can be found within the dense canopy and understory of Sinharaja. Among the prized sightings are the dazzling cobalt-blue Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, the Green-billed Coucal, the Sri Lanka Spurfowl, and the secretive Serendib Scops Owl—a species only discovered by science in 2001.

One of the most remarkable phenomena in Sinharaja is the 'mixed-species bird feeding flock.' Flocks of dozens of birds from up to 20 different species—led by the vocal Orange-billed Babbler and the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo—move together through the forest canopy in coordinated symbiosis, flushing insects and feeding collaboratively.

The forest itself is a sensory marvel of colossal canopy trees, prehistoric tree ferns, crystal mountain waterfalls, and cascading streams populated by endemic purple-faced langurs, tree frogs, and jewel-colored butterflies.
